Hokies' Glennon to start

Sean Glennon will be Virginia Tech's starting quarterback this season while sophomore Tyrod Taylor takes a redshirt season.

"For the long term and for the good of the program, this is in our best interest," Hokies coach Frank Beamer said Tuesday.

Cory Holt will begin the football season as the nominal backup, and Taylor could be called on if Glennon can't play, but only up to a certain point in the season, Beamer said. After that date, which he did not reveal, protecting Taylor's redshirt season will be a priority.

The decision is one Taylor supports, Beamer said.

"Tyrod wanted to redshirt, and we are trying to do what is in his best interest for him," Beamer said

PENN STATE MAKES CLARK ITS STARTER: Daryll Clark will start at quarterback when 22nd-ranked Penn State opens the season against Coastal Carolina on Saturday.

Coach Joe Paterno said Clark's experience and solid preseason gave him the edge over Pat Devlin.

ORE SURFACES AT WEST LIBERTY: Former Virginia Tech running back Branden Ore has transferred to Division II West Liberty for his senior season.

The arrival of Ore, who was dismissed by Hokies coach Frank Beamer in March, had been rumored for months.

Ore's cousin, Darren Banks, is a cornerback at West Liberty.

BRIEFLY: Defensive ends Eric Moncur and Allen Bailey have been ruled out of Miami's Thursday night opener against Charleston Southern because of injuries.

* The NCAA said Tuesday that it's still considering quarterback Ben Mauk's latest appeal for more playing time, contrary to what it told his lawyer a day earlier.

* In a vote by the team members, this season's N.C. Central captains are senior quarterback Stadford Brown, senior kicker Brandon Gilbert, sophomore defensive lineman Donald Laster, senior offensive lineman Jovan Olafioye and senior running back Jeff Toliver.
