Malernee Fuels Toppers Comeback

 

West Liberty came from 10 down at the half to defeat Shepherd, fueled by 22 points from Laura Malernee.

Malernee hit 7 of 15 attempts behind the line as the Hilltoppers (2-2 overall, 1-0 WVIAC) won their conference opener and avenged a loss to the Rams in last season's first round of the NCAA Division II regional tournament.

Tori Hansen scored 16 points and dished out a team-high nine assists while Cassie Smith totaled 14 points.

Freshman Meghan Wiseman had one point, but corralled a game-high 11 rebounds as West Liberty held a 42-40 edge off the glass.

Shepherd (1-3, 0-1) was led by 21 points from Katie Warehime.

Fairmont St. 51

Wheeling Jesuit 36

FAIRMONT - Former Bellaire standout Ashley Vavrek scored 20 points to lead Fairmont State (2-1, 1-0) to a victory against Wheeling Jesuit in a mutual conference opener.

Gabby Gattuso and Samantha Wanichko each had eight points for the Fighting Falcons.a

Bridget Buskirk led Wheeling Jesuit 12 with points. The Cardinals shot 28 percent from the field and misfired on all 16 3-point attempts.

Kim Mueller added seven points for Jesuit.

West Virginia 67

Florida Intern. 59, OT

MORGANTOWN - Takisha Granberry and Ashley Powell combined for 10 points in overtime to lift West Virginia (3-1) to a victory against Florida Interantional (0-3).

Granberry and Liz Repella both score more than 20 points, the first duo to do so since Olayinka Sanni (20) and Meg Bulger (20) did against Lousivlle in March of 2008.

Granberry was 8 of 20 from the field and 4-9 from behind the arc to finish with 24 points. Repella had 21 points and 10 rebounds before falling out 17 seconds into overtime.

Monika Bosilj led FIU with 19 points, while Fanni Hutlassa contributed 12 points off of the bench. Adley grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and scored eight points in 25 minutes of play.

Third-Place Game

Bethany 91, Nazareth 82

ERIE, Pa - Joe Testa ignited for a career-high 23 points to lead four double-digit scorers as Bethany took third place in the Penn State Behrend Tournament with a victory against Nazareth.

Tyler Morando and Petre Petkovski each had 15 points for the Bison, while Dakota Matz chipped in with 14.

Ryan McAdam led Nazareth with 23 points, tying Testa for game-high.
